Mr. Matthew Uppman has been in the guard community since 2005. In 2007, he was a Gold Medalist in the Mid-Continent Color Guard Association's Scholastic C Division and was the Captain of his High School guard in 2008 and 2009. From 2009 to 2014, he performed with Synchronicity Winter Guard and has three Mid-Continent Independent A Medals. In 2009, Synchronicity went to Semi-finals in the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships with their show "Complex Simplicity". In 2012, Matt preformed with Panache Winter Guard. During this season the team not only was promoted from Regional Class to Independent Class, they were awarded Silver Medals at MCCGA Circuit Championships. In the 2014 season, Mr. Uppman ended his marching career and aged-out with Synchronicity performing in their fan-favored show "Stand Up".
Mr. Uppman has been coaching around the Greater KC Area since sometime in 2010. He has been the Guard Director of the Belton High School Guard Program since Fall of 2012. Along with coaching BHS, Matt has worked with many other schools in various capacities across the Kansas City Area. For several years he served as the instructor and choreographer for Synchronicity Independent A Winter Guard. In addition to coaching, he judges for various marching festivals around the area as well as previously for the Novice Class throughout the MCCGA circuit. During the 2021 season, Matt preformed with the Spintornix Virtual Guard (SVG) and the WGI eShowcase. He enjoys teaching clinics, working to host winter guard festivals, attending school's auditions and more! He is proud to share his love of Color and Winter Guard with students from across the region, and beyond!
Mr. Uppman has a Bachelors of Arts in Special Education as well as a Masters Degree in Collaborative Teaching and Learning from Graceland University. Mr. Uppman also has completed course work from the National Federation of State High School Associations to be an Accredited Interscholastic Coach as well as a Level 2 Music Certificate. For his "real job", He has done work as a Site Coordinator and Youth Methods Trainer for a local non-profit organization that runs Community Organizing and Child Care Programs. Currently, he is enjoying the school year teaching Middle School English Language Arts.
